And got him to talk about how smoking convincingly on film, how to play good naked and on the coolest character idea which turned out to be a total bummer.

It was already expressed in the debut film ‘Pusher’, but has become extra clear in recent years, when Danish film’s largest world star has really entered international genre films, among other things with roles in three of the greatest franchises of the time: As testicular crushing villain in ‘Casino Royale’, as a malicious wizard with a hang of fly-kung fu in ‘Doctor Strange’ and as the main architect of movie history’s most iconic weapons of mass destruction in ‘Rogue One’.

Now Mads Mikkelsen takes on her first major role in an international action-flapping, the Netflix film “Polar”. And there is no saving on the cartridges, the blood or the entertaining love for the comicbook’s original sexploitation style and pure violence.

The Dane plays the iconic cartoon character The Black Kaiser, who sits heavily on the title “The World’s Best Assassin”. Until he is told he should retire at the age of 50, the boss is not going to pay the chain-smoking hired murderer’s savings of small seven million dollars, but instead sent a team of younger and faster assassins to him. The role was a bit of a boy’s dream for Mikkelsen, who has always had a great love for comics:

“In almost all other films and comics that you have seen on this topic, the hiring manager has a great suit and sunglasses, and then they say some badass replicas all the time. It’s oneliners all the time, man! I didn’t bother at all, so we took punchlines and oneliners and threw them out – and there were quite a few of them in the beginning.”

“On film it has become a little uphill experience, because we must not smoke real tobacco on the set. There are some rules for over here.
So you get some plant clothes. It’s completely away. It tastes so bad that you do not understand it at all. And it can’t really stay alive, and the ashes become completely black. It works really bad! So the secret is not to do it too often in too many scenes, because it always ends up with you throwing 40-60 false smokes down because you do the scenes so many times.
The good thing is, I don’t want to smoke personally “.

“Strangely enough, I think that the character you identify most with in the movie, is my character, because we downplay his story right down to such a Woody Allen’s pace. Being a killer is just The Black Kaiser’s job. He never thought about it, and even if it catches him, it’s not that he is running around with mega guilty conscience.”

“I was taught by the retired Special Forces people. Then I come to such a shooting ranch, where I shoot with everything you can imagine and get to know everything so we can improvise and find out which weapons are fun to use.”

“Just before ‘Polar’ I had recorded the survival movie ‘Arctic’. And that was… so, if this was hard, ‘Arctic’ was even harder. I got some pretty violent colds, and I made some severe desperate-crying scenes in the movie, so I lost my voice pretty hard. I was simply so rusty, and I didn’t quite get over that when we started on “Polar”. So we thought it was fucking fine enough, ‘We should not just say that’s the new sexy voice, I have invented, if it’s just something that came from a cold’.”

“Right now is the challenge, that people do not start talking about, that I do it all the time. It is always a challenge. But I’ve done it a couple of times, it’s completely right.”

You do not have a chance to see if you hit the man or someone beside him. You really need to train yourself to let your brain understand that the image you see is different. It is mega heavy.”

“Here we think it was fun to tell how Black Kaiser got the patch on. In the comic book he has patched from start to finish, but here it happens quite late. Then we also avoided running around with patch through the whole movie.”

He is uncompromising when it comes to killing people.”

“We think it was a really cool detail, but when the day comes, it’s just a total downturn. It’s minus 30 degrees and you just don’t want to do it. But I think it works really well in the movie, so I’m happy again today. But on the day itself, I wanted to go home and sleep.”

“You don’t really do that. It is extremely awkward for most of us. There are some very clear rules in the United States, and that has also come in Denmark now here. And there is a huge reason for that.”

Otherwise, it can be really, really awkward and cross-border. Therefore, you make clear rules of the game for that kind of thing, and we did that on this film as well.”

“It was something like that you didn’t have to look people in the eyes longer than five seconds.
These were serious rules – and you just stood and thought, “Have you completely lost the pacifier?” There is a good reason why there are rules, but when you go crazy and make the rules crazy, then it has the opposite effect. So I still believe that we should probably find the balance through common sense. And then it’s everyone’s job to discover, if someone is not good at a movie set. We must discover.”

個人的な感想は下記。
Polarのタバコ全部偽物ってすごいですね…！マッツ不味いの我慢してずっと吸ってたのかw
「セクシーボイス」は、マッツ自身の意見ではないとはいえマッツが自分の声をそう言ってるのなかなか破壊力ありませんか？自分で言うのかよ！と思いつつも、これおどけながら言ってるんだろうな、とも思いつつ、いやでも真実だから無問題…？とも思いつつ、どんな気持ちでそれ言ってるんだろう、とも思いつつ…。ぐるぐる。
あと「家に帰って寝たい…」って内心思ってるマッツ可愛い。ふて寝してほしい。可愛い。
